Start of Spring – the Royal Adelaide Show 2013!

Spring is here and as everyone who lives in Adelaide might know, this means it’s time for the Royal Adelaide Show! The Royal Adelaide Show is an agricultural show held every year in Adelaide. It offers a chance for folks from the city (such as me!) to see farm animals, have a taste of South Australian produce and participate in traditional fair games and rides.

At the entrance to the Show

Being first-time visitors to the Royal Adelaide Show, my friends and I went there bright and early in the morning. The first pavilion we went to was the Showbags Hall in Wayville Pavilion. A showbag is essentially a goodie bag filled with various items, and the cost of all the items in the bag was worth more than the cost of the showbag itself, which made it a good bargain! We spent nearly an hour in the Showbags Hall since there was such a large variety of showbags to look at.

Next, we went to the Main Arena where there was a Show Jumping competition going on.

After show jumping ended, we visited the Pet Centre and got distracted by all the cute and cuddly animals in the centre! In the Fishes section were decorated tanks which had different themes. The two tanks below were my favourites –  (1) the dentist’s tank from Finding Nemo (you can see Nemo at the top of the tank!) and (2) Bikini Bottom from Spongebob Squarepants.

There were also other companion animals besides fishes in the Pet Centre, such as rabbits, cats, dogs and birds.

I even managed to find an Angry Bird in real life! Doesn’t the little blue bird with the red cheeks look like the blue bird from Angry Birds?

After the Pet Centre, we managed to stumble across another hidden gem in the Show – farm animals! Some curious alpacas were the first to greet us when we entered the pavilion. I never even knew that there were different breeds of alpacas. We saw sheep (with their little lambs!), goats, chickens, ducks, pigs, cows and many other farm animals.

We saw different types of cattle at the show too. There are two varieties of cows – (1) beef cows and (2) dairy cows. Beef cattle have a more ‘rectangular’ body shape since they are primarily bred for their meat. They were also huge!

There were also plenty of events to watch at the Show. We had our lunch break at one of the arenas and spent our lunchtime there watching the Wood Cutting competition. The competition featured participants from different Australian states and New Zealand. They had to chop notches into the tree, fit planks into these notches, and ‘climb’ their way up the tree to chop the wood at the top of the tree. The first to chop off the top of the tree was the winner.IMG_0040 IMG_0039Besides farm animals, there were also magnificent baking masterpieces at the Royal Adelaide Show. Can you even believe that these are all cakes?20130907_143820 20130907_143830 20130907_145042 20130907_145326

There was a chocolate fountain too. As you can imagine, this got everyone very excited.

After an eventful day at the Royal Adelaide Show, we ended off our day to a glorious sunset back at the Main Arena. I can say that this is the most fun I have ever had since arriving in Adelaide 7 weeks ago, since this is possibly the first ‘big’ event that I have attended. Here’s to many more fun events in the future!IMG_0083
